Hamlet's dilema

In the words of Eminem " Look, if you had one shot, or one opportunity to seize everything you ever wanted. One moment. Would you capture it or just let it slip?" To compare this to Hamlet, he had an opportunity to kill his uncle and avenge his father. However, he lets it slip away. In my opinion he should have just done it. Hamlet reminds me a lot of Holden from The Catcher in the Rye. Holden always wants to to do something, for example call jane, and yet he never commits to it. Through out the book Holden keeps second guessing himself and never does what he says. Hamlet is the same. He wants to take take down his uncle but doesn't commit to it.

This scene says a lot about Claudius. Even though Claudius was repenting he only wanted forgiveness of what he did and keep everything he gained, the throne and Gertrude. Even though Claudius was repenting he only wanted forgiveness of what he did and keep everything he gained, the throne and Gertrude. To me he's one of those people who are never really sorry until they are caught. He did not show any guilt until the trap Hamlet put out for him. When he starts praying he does look sorry. He sounds scared of the sin he committed and is now worried what will happen to him in the after life. To me if he really was worried, why commit the crime in the first place if you can not deal with the consequences?

In an issue of honor Hamlet did do the right thing by letting his uncle live. Since Claudius was unaware of Hamlet it would make Hamlet look cowardly. Also, Hamlet was probably also worried about what will happen in the after life if he killed while he was praying. He wanted him to go to hell and not to heaven. Plus, everybody thinks he has gone mad and killing his Uncle would probably make him look worse.

  1. Jacob I love the lyrics you used to start off and state your opinion. I agree with your analysis of Claudius, he was kinda like "I want forgiveness, and the throne, and Gertrude, and while I'm at it everything else" He is selfish, and deserved to die for sure, Hamlet should've pulled the trigger.

  2. Nice! You integrate two of my favorite people, Eminem and Holden, with another one of my favorites, Hamlet. It's apropos, since all three seem to straddle being disaffected and passionate at the same time. This scene really captures that paradox, IMO.
